Perhaps no structure is more tied to the history of the city. The White Tower was built by William the Conqueror, the palace in the foreground by Edward I, and so on. The Byward Tower originally housed the Royal Mint, and it was here that many prisoners were kept when the Tower served as a prison. Among the famous inmates were Sir Thomas More, Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, Lady Jane Grey, and even the future Queen Elizabeth I.
