wow i forgot about him...

He was always a very interesting villain, yes. I was never sure really what he was. He appeared as a first as a pile of sludge, then a blackened skeleton, and finally an anthropomorphic cloud of smoke.

I always entertained the idea that he was some kind of powerful demon with a toxin/pollution theme. He was manifested from a volcano by accident and went on a destructive rampage (as demons are wont to do) until the fairies sealed him into a tree.

Then he was released again, and wanted revenge on the fairies and their Fern Gully. I think that if he had gotten rid of them he would have turned on the humans. :P

Interestingly enough, the original lyrics of the song Toxic Love (by Tim Curry) support that.

Only the bold lyrics ever made it into the move. They cut out all the other lines about his motivations to make the song into a ham handed anti-industrialization gimmick =/

I watched this a couple times as a kid, but I really enjoyed the team-up Nostalgia Critic/Nostalgia Chick review of it. :P
