Bears have much more intelligence than Humans give them credit for. Many of them can navigate by the stars; if they are displaced by the wildlife officers, they'll just wait until dark; sit and study the sky, then set off for home (a contact's brother was a game warden at Yellowstone). It's a short logical jump to Bears developing their own almanacs, which might have this sort of information.
