The navigation console, which faces the doorway into the TARDIS, is mainly concerned with plotting a course through space and time to reach the desired location. The Navigational Console detects safe paths through the vortex, although if there is no completely safe way to go, the pilot may make use of the Manual Override switch.
The Travel Indicator is used to determine at what point in flight the TARDIS currently is -- dematerializing, in flight, parked, etc.
The Coordinate Indicator is used to program the space-time coordinates for the computer to plot a course.
The Primary and Secondary Materialization Switches must be pulled in the correct order for smooth materialization. In between pulling one and the other, the Safety Switch determines whether or not the landing coordinates are safe, or if the TARDIS is about to materialize inside a sun or something. It then makes appropriate adjustments to the landing. The Safety Switch should always remain on.
The Stasis Switch is turned on when the TARDIS is left to hover in the vortex in between destinations. The Fast-Return Switch is used to return the TARDIS to its landing spot immediately prior to its current location. The Automated Coordinator Input is used to insert pre-programmed flight paths. The Course Acceptance Unit is the computer used to check and confirm the flight path.
