Oh it's not that the studio isn't providing the money for it, quite the contrary. The studio has green-lighted the two sequel movies. The issue is that Chris Weitz was able to neatly circumnavigate the attacks on Christianity in the first film by making the Magisterium into a sort of ruthless shadow government entity, rather than making it obvious as the Catholic church. With the following two books, it becomes impossible to continue the story without revealing that fact, and Chris Weitz isn't the only director in the world who is not willing to take on the Catholic church, and in the end show that angels can be gay, show the church being toppled, and ultimately their "God" being killed at the hands of children... It's really a shame if you ask me. =/

Yeah, as soon as I heard that Hollywood was producing a HDM movie I wondered that: how on earth were they going to pull off the second two? The scene in the last book where Lyra and Will free the "Authority" especially. Not to mention the whole metaphor with Mary Malone and original sin. There is just no conceivable way to do that in a children's movie without the parents of most of its target audience flipping out, haha.
