The signature Edsel pushbutton transmission is seen on the steering wheel hub of this Pacer from 1958. One of the other unique Edsel features is the speedometer sitting on top of the instrument cluster. Instead of a needle turning within a fixed dial, the pointer was stationary and the numbers rotated under it.

Isn't it great? IIRC, another auto manufacturer offered a push-button transmission for a short time, but it's best known as an Edsel feature.

Both Mopar and Rambler made push button automatics.

The famous Jupiter II speedometer!

If you think about it, you're probably not going to be underway when you poke those buttons, so the somewhat inconvenient placement isn't going to endanger anyone.

I have to assume the hub they are mounted on was stationary. If so, I don't think I'd consider their placement too inconvenient.

I... had never considered that. Looking at this picture, though, you can see the wheel is cocked about 30° clockwise, but the buttons are in their correct orientation. You must be right.

I only ever say the push buttons on the dash - like my Dad's Buick which looked very similar to the Olds...
