When you're a relatively small lizard and you hear someone sneaking up on you then it could be just natural to be a little nervous and if you have powers you can lash out. We can also see that shadow is stronger than ice or at least blows through that shield, though it might have lessened the impact a little. It looks though like he won't be waking up for a little while and I imagine will have sore ribs and the poor lizard looks as though he's feeling quite remorseful.
When you have hooves though, sneaking isn't always so easy even if you just want to give someone a surprise hug which I guess was perhaps the intent here.
