The Right to Arm Bears
I have seen every single Open Season movie. I'm not proud of that, but it's a fact.
Basically nobody makes fanart of it, and for good reason, but this was a good excuse for me to try painting in a new way. Consider this an experiment and less genuine fan labor.
Open Season is weird. IIRC it was Sony's first foray into theatrical film animation, and it was released in a year where the Funnee Talking Aminul market was very oversaturated. It was beyond mediocre, but it wasn't terrible and it felt like effort was put into it. This is exactly how the concept art feels as well. Looking at the environment and character designs makes me think this film was going to be handicapped by its own fearfulness from the start - there was obvious talent and effort put into the lively forests and unique animals, but nothing too daring so as to scare away, or genuinely entrance, the movie-going public. Shame. I'm just glad the studio began experimenting more and navigating its own distinct style of animation, otherwise idk how much anyone would like anything it put out up til Spiderverse lel.
btw the sequels suck so bad but the fourth one is alright? its not good but its alright. compare its animation to the first's to pee your pants

When I saw this in thumbnail form in my inbox I saw that bear backpack and immediately got whiplash.
I worked on licensed plush for this movie a few jobs ago, and we did one of that bear backpack, and I NEVER would have remembered that at all if not for this!
This is a beautiful artwork too, by the way!!!
