Firethorn-North American F-86R / Rapier F.5
An FNA Rapier F.5 of the 223 MAS about to be launched from the bow catapult of fleet Carrier Eastern Provinces.
The Firethorn-North American (FNA) F-86M / Rapier F.1 is a single-engine, carrier-based all-weather jet interceptor developed by Firethorn Aviation Company based on the design of the late 20th century North American F-86 Sabre jet fighter. The FNA Rapier was the first all-weather jet aircraft in the Nordenfeld Imperial Marine service and was fielded as a stop-gap measure to replace the propeller-driven Sea Fendrake as fleet defense interceptor in the late 770s. While it only sees a brief service with the Imperial Marine, it provided excellent service as a first-line fighter in the Royal Shevalli Navy for over two decades.
Although resembling the F-86 Sabre in many ways, the Rapier shares almost no common part with its 20th-century predecessor. the fuselage is completely redesigned to house the huge MOSFRAN AI.20 radar system in the nose and its operator in a tandem cockpit. To achieve this, the radome is enlarged and the air intake is split into bifurcated design and moved further aft. The tail is lengthened to compensate for the longer nose and to accommodate the indigenous JT75 afterburning turbojet engine, while the overall structures are strengthened for carrier operation.
The Rapier was designed without internal armament, but it could carry a 25 mm Revolver cannon in a conformal gun pod fitted to centerline recess under the fuselage. In addition, the Rapier has four stores pylons, two under each wing. Typical external load could include two 500 liter drop tanks, two MOSFRAN Viper SRAAMs or Two 3-inch rocket pods. Later marks with improved AI.23 radar system are capable of carrying two Skyflash SARH missiles.
