Okay, so I scanned it here because we have this before and after thing going on. Check out the robe. On the left (our left) are a few sketchy lines done with very light and dark pencils, and on the right is a smoothed-out robe all done.
The difference? I used one blue to smooth over all the other stuff I had put there. I carefully blended it all together, and already had a nice gradient going! Sure, it still needed a little tweak and polish, and still does, but I think you can get the idea pretty well.
For the fur, you'll notice a lot of short lines in many colors. Or maybe not. But that's how I make fur look more fur-ish: lots of short lines blended.
