What do you do when the world around you ends? I don’t mean end as in it’s over, but end as in everything you ever knew or trusted changed all at once. What would you do if you found yourself stuck in the middle of complete global crisis? Riots in every city, every nation thrown in disarray, military powers on a hair trigger ready to blow everything into cinders. How would you feel if one day you woke up and the person you knew yourself to be was forced to accept a new reality?
When it happened to me, I nearly went crazy.
The changes, in reality were a lot more subtle. On the morning of January 15 when I woke up nothing really seemed amiss. My morning started very routine. I stretched and headed for the kitchen for my regular cup of coffee and my morning dose of news. I turned the set on and a rather ominous headline greeted me; "Panic overtakes the nation". Being still groggy I didn’t quite grasp what the handsome anchor was saying but I could tell that something serious had happened. It didn’t help that the panic seemed to have leeched into the anchor as he was talking fast and breathing heavy.
After watching a few minutes of nearly incomprehensible news reporting I turned the set off and started getting ready for work. I set off my work clothes and took a nice long hot shower. As I was toweling dry it seemed odd to me that so many cars were backfiring on the street. It didn’t dawn on me till much later that what I was hearing was gunshots. I went about my morning following my set rituals until I set out for work.
The first real change I noticed was how deserted my street looked. Normally my neighbor Dave would be fetching his paper as his kids waited for the school bus playing whatever game they started at breakfast. I was accustomed to him and his kids greetings. His house, on this fateful morning was deserted. There were no lights on, his car was gone. In fact the whole street seemed to have an air of abandonment. I tiny shiver of fear worked its way up my spine. It wasn’t only the fact that Dave seemed to have disappeared but there were other subtle signs. There were no other people on the street, there were no cars driving by, every house looked empty. Even the quality of the morning light was off.
That was the moment when my stigma began to take root.
