The young woman shivered as the wind grazed her bare skin. The ropes tightly bound her wrists and feet to the old tree. They had left her here, in hopes to bribe the beast of the wood to leave their village alone. The sting of betrayal burned in her eyes. The Twisted remains of the old timber rubbed her flesh raw and the right bindings cut into her joints, she could smell the metallic scent of blood tainting the air.
A movement in the brush before her caused her to scream. The bloodcurdling cry traveled to the village, a signal that the beast got their offering.
As she fought until she had no more strength, she fell limp and hung awaiting her demise. A voice in the back of her brain gently soothed her.
”There is no need to be frightened. Tell us, What is your name?”
”How c....can you say that? I’m here to die.” She stammered, frantically looking about. The voice made an eerie sound as if annoyed. ‘You are here because the people of the village believe they can stop their slaughter by bribing the beast. They follow the true believers but make mockery of the sacrifice they make.
The woman felt a presence envelope her mind, as if it were searching her memories and carefully cataloging each one. The voice returned, different this time. ‘Bri?’
The woman gasped and started to cry, she knew that voice. She thought she’d never hear it again when she’d went missing. A long finger circled from around the tree and wiped a tear from her swollen eye. Her broken body fading from the world fast.
’Shhhh now, you’ll wake stronger than before. You’ll punish these monsters for what they’ve done to you.’
Bri’s last vision was a figure approaching her holding a glowing green seed like object.
Night fell, Bri felt the moon calling her blood to rise. The forest beckoned her to come deeper into its dark depths. She slowly pushed herself up, thinking the ache was just her broken body and adrenaline. She couldn’t walk upright as easily as before. The voices of the hunting party traveled to her and she rushed to hide. Her heart racing, she let out a howl as she caught her reflection in the stream beside her. Another howl rang out as she noticed the beast sitting across from her.
The beast slowly touched its forehead and Bri knew immediately that it was her lost friend. Another voice lovingly entered her mind, unlike before and this one was a new motherly voice.
’My child, you are now Meliora. You will be my vessel to punish those who seek to harm those who protect me. You’re soul will be my arrow of punishment and I am your vengeance.”
Her new body hunched into a feral pose, she examined herself in her reflection. She was horrifying yet beautiful. She descended upon the hunting party and made short work of the weak men. Blood dripping from her barred skull, her mouth stained with the life of those she’d taken. Her attention turned to the celebration of the village.
The forest darkened and the village grew quiet. Their blood grew cold as they saw another pair of glowing eyes join the ones that had haunted them before. The mother had gained another soul to protect herself, and her children were always hungry.
