This guy here is a fursona I came up with back in about August. I actually drew this back in mid-October but I've been kinda indecisive as to whether to actually use him as my fursona, which combined with just generally being busy with various things including moving house, meant I didn't get around to uploading until now. He doesn't currently have an actual name, so I just refer to him as the Whaleboat.
The Whaleboat has a backstory set in an alt-universe Earth, which I'll detail below. In terms of general details, he's half humpback whale, half battleship, and is about 650ft in length from head to tail and weighs around 71,000 tonnes. This is just his standard size, though, as he's able to shift his form, usually opting for a form around 15ft tall as his secondary form when in inhabited areas. He also isn't limited to being a whaleboat, actually being a full shapeshifter theoretically able to adopt virtually any form so long as it's part biological and part mechanical. He never voluntarily adopts non-whaleboat forms, however there may be... ways to force him into other forms. (This may or may not all be an excuse for me to be able to use him for tf art in the future.) Anyhow, here's his backstory:
In the summer of 1921, off the coast of Antarctica, a crew of scientists aboard a British vessel found something strange encased in a small iceberg. They broke off the portion of the iceberg it was within and brought it with them as they headed back to London. As they thawed the ice, they found it was a bluish slime made of an unknown material. As they reached the city, they found the slime reacted to their attempts to offload it, suggesting it was a living organism, so they took it into the laboratory for further testing. Their testing proved that not only was this slime alive, but it was able to manipulate its form to the extent it could break the first law of thermodynamics. However, while the slime could theoretically take any form, its volatile state meant it quickly returned to its natural amorphous form within seconds. Nonetheless, the scientists saw great potential in this, so they set out on a project to develop a mechanical attachment that could stabilise its form according to its will. As this long project continued, they found increasing evidence that the organism possessed a humanlike level of intelligence and emotional capacity, so they taught it to speak and understand English.
In the mid 1930s, as Britain geared up for a potential war with the German Reich, the military caught wind of this project and began to invest heavily, in the hopes the organism could be molded into a living battleship capable of operating without a crew and generating its own ammunition. In the meantime, more expeditions were sent to Antarctica to find more of these organisms, but none were successful. The project picked up speed over the following years, but as the Second World War escalated, with the project still incomplete, the British government feared what would happen if this secret project fell into German hands, so the organism was shipped to Canada, to be continued in a secret facility located in Vancouver. There, the project continued only for a matter of months before funding grew scarce, and the Canadian government made the decision to transfer development to the Americans, and so it was relocated again, this time to Seattle.
The project was completed in November 1941. A mechanical attachment was fitted to the organism which linked up to its mind and allowed it to maintain its form. By this point its education had been completed, and the American government was in the process of finalising an agreement to return it to the United Kingdom for use as part of an operation to secure the Mediterranean and block Axis supply lines from reaching Rommel's forces in north Africa. However, the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbour and America's entrance into the war soon led to a change of plans, and the organism was trained for use on the Pacific Front. Initially it simply adopted the form of a battleship, but it soon grew fascinated with a humpback whale it encountered during training, and chose to adopt a hybrid form incorporating the whale's appearance in combination with human limbs. Eventually, in April 1942, it was ready for combat.
The whaleboat's first few battles were a great success, as naturally the Japanese weren't expecting the enemy ship to dive beneath the waves to avoid artillery fire before leaping out and body-slamming their ships into pieces. Over the following few years it was instrumental in turning the tide of the theatre, as its attacks on smaller Japanese fleets, which invariably ended in their total destruction, dwindled their numbers. As the war approached its end, however, the whaleboat began to develop a sympathy towards not only the Japanese sailors whose lives he ended, but also towards the ships he destroyed, and shifted his efforts towards removing combatants and ships from the war without killing them, dropping off the crews in various places and keeping the ships for himself, so he could preserve them. Eventually the war ended, and as a reward for his contributions he was allowed to keep one of the formerly Japanese Pacific islands for himself, where he would live out his life in peace.
Later, as the Cold War raged on, he swore an oath of neutrality in return for neither side interfering with him or his island, and to this day he calls the island his home. Throughout this time, his existence was kept mostly secret, with only military officials being aware of him, though over the decades conspiracy theories emerged as individuals claimed to witness a huge, ship-like creature swimming through the Pacific. Finally, in the late-2010s, he obtained means of accessing the internet, and there he found an online community who appeared... enthusiastic about beings such as himself, so he chose to reveal his identity to them and start communicating with people for the first time in decades.
In terms of future drawings of him I don't really have any specific plans as of right now, but I wanna have him be a major part of what I upload here going forward. I'm also considering the possibility of commissioning art of him in the future, but that'll have to wait at least a month or two because I currently have higher priorities in terms of spending.
Also as a note because it's something that fucks with me every time I look at the picture, his tail is suspended in midair, not flat against the ocean surface, the angle and the cutoff point of the bottom of the image just make it look that way. The drawing was done immediately before spending like a week and a half away from home, so I just didn't have the time to fix it, or to add shading for that matter.
