Thelma was an airplane mechanic and pilot during the grand old age of aviation in the 1910s and 20s. She was as sassy and spunky as a tomboy could get. Heck some of the other air jockies use to call her Death Wrench Thelma, after an incident having to deal with a guy playing grabby with her bottom and her wrench getting intimate with his skull. Yah she was short tempered but she was also a loyal friend. After her buddy Hal died in a car crash Thelma helped out his widow raise her five kids. So say what you will about her personality, deep down she was good soul and you couldn't ask for any better than that.
