Ah, he got caught up in the technicalities that a regular churchgoer would know, but an outsider wouldn't. Misplaced priorities on his part He's trying to be helpful, but he's saying the exact wrong thing (both generally, and worse in her specific case). Sometimes hard to break out of your own viewpoint and look at it from someone else's perspective - I know I've done similar things on occasion , though hopefully not quite on this scale.
While I agree that the Bishop's (well-intentioned) words were inappropriate here, I think Ronnie's reaction was too intense and too quick. There is something beneath the surface here, perhaps an inner subconsious voice that was just begging her to look for a reason to turn around and leave. And now that voice is yelling, "I told you so!"
