I decided to go back to some of my original designs for Flames and expand upon them, just to see what the result would have been had I continued had I kept with that design. To keep in line with old times, this marks the first time I have dropped my current methods not for a new one, but for my old M$ Paint. Ah, the nostalgia...
For comparison, old designs are http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1950162/ and http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2198528/
The more complicated answer behind the differing designs besides my ever-shifting art style is actually plot-related. In Flames' story, his appearance and armour changes slightly between Warrior and Resurrection. In Resurrection one of these changes is the red streaks in his hair and the style, whilst his armour was to become less bulky and look less Zero-like. Ironically what we see of Flames most of the time is Resurrection design but in an armour closer to the one in Warrior, whilst the Flames in early art is closer to his Warrior appearance with the armour being a cross between the Warrior one and Resurrection armour.
Confusing, eh? ^^;
Oh and as for final notes on this piece, I think this adaptation of my old style, particularly with the face, is an improvement over my early days. I think it's a sign of how I've improved that when going back to the ol' tools of the trade and good ol' style that despite not having used either in a long time this came out better.
I'd be lying if I'd say I'm 100% happy with it, but I'm satisfied...for now. Still gotta work on poses more >.<
Finally, shadow was done in the GIMP and HoKaze no Flames is (C) to me, whilst Zero is (C) Capcom.

Heh, maybe. If you do, I'd prefer we try to get the Resurrection design done. I don't have any rock-solid specifics yet, but the general idea is that the armour needs to be less bulky, less zero-like, include more in the way of the stripe/spike designs possibly, perhaps use less bright colours, no bulb lights of course, rounder shoulders and with Flames himself, I'd say keep him the same but maybe the eyes could do with a re-haul.
Heh, it's never simple or easy with me is it?
Oh and just to clarify, this style is more of a one-off return to my roots. The newer Flames design is one I'm happy with, although it isn't perfect in fitting in with what I had planned an eternity ago plot-wise. The armour used in most art should be used as a base rather than this more bright and cartoony variant.
...bah, I really need to get a solid idea of what I want in my head and on paper >.<

Yeah, sorry to dump extra work on you. I think we need more time to get this thing clear. And I dunno, it might be better if I can get a few arts together on my own to illustrate the changes from the Warrior design to the Resurrection design, something I've been meaning to do for quite a while. That and I'm trying to rely on external sources less ^^;
...and what do you mean "I may actually be onto something"?

Well, I could possibly use this piece as a definite reference in what to change, though I already see the shoulders being the most difficult change.The sabre should be easy, along with the chest. The head/hair we'll definitely need to talk more on. And lastly, the pants portion will be difficult to texture in.
Yes to chest change, what part of the sabre are you planning on changing because I like the actual beam as it is. The head hair should be kept as is and yeah, shoulders will be a challenge to model, as will the textures for everything else.
To clarify, this art doesn't represent the Resurrection design except for a few aspects of the armour design. Flames' head and hair should be left as is ^^;

The sabre's handle is gold currently, I was going to change it to silver to match, but the thing is that it's currently a red-beam with an orange aura. And if you can get me as much detail on the shoulders along with the stripes on the body, I'll see what I can do.
Okay, changing to silver matches my intentions and I guess beam-wise something similar to http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2663792/ would be preferable. Shoulder design is basically the same as it is now, but all red instead of red and white, having the edges more curved to create a rounder-look and where Zero's insignia would be is replaced by a dark metallic shape that looks like a rounded rectangle pointing down with the top cut off. (just look at the art for that). The stripes should also be of dark colouring (not sure about metallic or not yet) and should be placed on edges of the legs, arms and torso, whilst the lower legs and upper arms should only have one either side. All of them should be curved "upwards".
