The Earth Runner - When You Feel It
Short story segment for my new project I've been working on, "The Earth Runner" which follows a young man named Sherwin who due to his unique features finds himself able to run "the wolf's way" on all fours. Here, a typical relaxing afternoon turns into a new encounter with the outside world that has emotionally scarred him.
Synopsis:
While most children enjoy the thrill of running as fast as they can, Sherwin has chosen to take it a step farther; four steps farther in fact. Sherwin was born differently than most other human children, and he soon discovered that these differences that earned him the unwanted nickname “dog boy” by others also allowed him to enjoy a way of movement largely unknown to humankind. With his sights set on being the fastest in the world racing in his unique quadrupedal way, Sherwin won't stop until he's at the top. From the primeval, winding forests to the pristine racing track, Sherwin will show what embracing your unique differences can go on to achieve greatness.
"The Earth Runner" follows Sherwin as he strives to reach his dream of setting the record for the quickest time in the 100m dash, but for Sherwin he immediately draws attention wherever he runs because he runs "the wolf's way". All his life he has shown a natural preference to run quadrupedally, partially as a result of his unique anatomy that allows him to maintain a full rotatory gallop when sprinting on all fours. From his youth running alongside the family dog where his parents first discovered the extent of unique ability, Sherwin has constantly trained to improve on his natural abilities, priding himself in going faster and longer than anyone else he knows as he runs connected to the earth. However, as supportive as his parents and a treasured few close friends have been, Sherwin faces a great deal of animosity from the larger world. His parents are forced to try and shield their "dog boy" (as he's been called many times before by others) away from the brunt of unkindness shown by strangers not familiar with him. How can Sherwin reconcile wanting to stay true to himself and achieve his dream of being the fastest against the pressures of a world that either fails to understand him or outright fear him altogether?
Would love to hear what you think of this concept or any questions you might have in the comments below. :)
