he said the gloves looked comfy, and i mean, they are, but he moved too fast and I couldn't warn him! you can't just take toon gloves off

It helps their hands stand out, which accentuates their motions and mannerisms. This was extra important in the early days of animation and mostly stuck around as tradition (as most cartoon characters don't do that now)

Additionally to what has been said, it allows the hands to be easily drawn on a separate layer of animation film. This allowed arms to be static while only hands were redrawn, saving time/effort while animating.

Partially to draw attention to their hands, but also partly because hands are REALLY hard to draw, with the slightest error making the whole picture look weird. They would draw gloves on so errors weren't as noticable.
