Whenever I hire a graphic artist for work, I give them a general idea of what I want and then I tell them that the interpretation of that, and the rest of it, is all up to them. Because I'm paying them for their experience and I'm sure they'll come up with something better than I ever could.
To date I have yet to be proven wrong. People who try to micromanage just don't understand that they're hurting themselves by not taking advantage of the experience before them.

It's been my experience that when a client is insistent on giving directions but doesn't use the same graphic design jargon you do, they most likely have no idea what they actually want. Doubly so when they get picky about fonts while suggesting Papyrus for the letterhead.
