Sometimes I rough in the background only loosly. If I'm going to use acrylics as opposed to inking it, I wouldn't bother. In this case, since I was going to ink it and then watercolour over, I worked out the trees and background pretty closely. 8 1/2x 11 pencil on illustration board.
