I've read about the Battle of Adwa. Baratieri didn't have positive control of his forces, and saw them massacred by detail. But it was a near-run thing; the Ethiopian forces were running out of food, and Menelik would have to withdraw if the Italians had waited one more day before accepting battle.
It was hard for the Italian forces to wait further, too. The Italian army had a series of recent defeats before Adwa, and they had only a few days’ supplies left, too. Furthermore, Baratieri was receiving strident cables from Rome insisting on a decisive victory (Even Prime Minister Crispi had wanted to replace Baratieri). But I think it's a great irony that when Menelik announced about the withdraw, the very same day Baratieri accepted to order an advance.
