Summer, 1287
It had been two years since Lord Haight had saved him from a certain Spring Festival sacrifice, and the little dragon had gradually learned to trust the lord’s household. He had been treated well, with a comfortable basket to call his own filled with cushions next to the manorial hearth and with rich meals of meats was now a little chubby. Lord Haight had decided to make sure that the dragon got plenty of exercise around the extensive gardens cultivated by Lady Jane.
This warm summer evening, as the cook finished preparing supper, saw Draco jumping chasing the fireflies in the twilight as lord and lady watched with amusement.
“I wonder what we can learn from a dragon that could speak human? What strange ideas would it have?” Lord Haight mused.
“Do you think wyrms can learn Auxian?” Lady Jane asked.
Lord Haight shrugged. “They are intelligent creatures, but I don’t think they have the gifts for human speech.”
The lady smirked that smile she did when she didn’t believe her husband.
“Let me try.”
She leaned down and put her arm on the dragon’s shoulder, pointing at the fireflies dancing in the night. “See that Draco? It’s a firebug. It makes light. Can you say bug?”
The little dragon cocked his head sideways at Lady Jane.
“Say bug! Bug!”
Draco barked.
“Bug! Come on, Draco, you can do it!”
Draco did a strange half-barking growl.
Lady Jane was trying her best not to be disappointed. Lord Haight gently placed his hand on her shoulder.
“Well it was a good effort, my lady, but-”
A firefly lazily fluttered by Draco’s snout. The dragon looked at it with the awe as if this was the first glowing thing that he had ever seen.
“Bug!” Draco called out.
Lord Haight and Lady Jane looked at each other.
“Good heavens!” Lord Haight exclaimed.
Lady Jane laughed turning to the little dragon sitting there. “See? You’re a smart cookie, Draco!”
The little dragon beamed. “Bug!”
Lord Haight’s mouth was slightly agape. He finally turned towards his wife. “Okay! You were correct, my lady. I will defer this to you.”
Lady Jane knelt down and petted the little dragon on the head.
“Oh I am going to teach you so much! You’re going to learn how to speak human, aren’t you, Draco?”
The dragon nuzzled Lady Jane’s hand, and then ran off. “Bugbugbugbugbugbugbug!” He called out to the fireflies, who scattered before his charge. The dragon continued chasing, still calling the fireflies their new nickname. Once started, the little dragon prattled on nonstop. The Haights watched Draco disappear into the shrubbery.
“Well I guess we’ll find out how dragons think.” Lord Haight muttered, before adding,
“What have we done to the world?”
