"You're too naive," the elder one spoke, glaring at his younger self. He clutched his cane tightly and eyed the young man thoroughly. "So full of youth, knowing very little of the danger the world poses," he spoke condescendingly and held his Iron Cross. "When you are in my place, you will learn how to send people to their graves... you will learn how to deceive and how to manipulate so that you can remain in the game."
"And you're too mean," the younger retorted and stared at his elder self with sadness and disappointment. "You forgot how to be friends... and you forgot how to be yourself."
"Be yourself? When you are facing a decision that could end you, and you choose to be yourself?" the elder one stammered and turned his back. "Enough with your morals and your fairytale-notion of the world!"
"Your Iron Cross... the one on your neck," the young one pointed out and the elder turned to face his younger self. "Gott mit uns... God with us. God said killing is bad."
The elder one sighed and patted the young man on his shoulder. "You will learn in time."
"If you truly are me... what is our favourite statement?"
The elder one, who began to pace away from his younger self, stopped and pondered. He turned back and moved closer to himself. "Our favourite statement...?" he inquired and to which, the young one nodded. "Is it..." he stammered and fumbled before finding the resolve to answer. "He who does not know how to look back at where he came from will never reach his destination...?"
The young one nodded. "Where do you want to go?"
"I..." he looked at his younger self, realising the youth had something he had not. "I don't know... I lack something that you have..."
"Is it faith? Then, have faith!"
