Some of the sources record that the rooster has to be a certain age for this to happen, and that there are some constellations or stars that foretell the possibility that a cockatrice egg is about to be laid. Again, this is from the old myths...not the more modern take on the supernatural, which makes them fodder for adventurers to go out and slay, butcher, harvest and collect. Back when things were a lot quirkier, and more monstrous, and in some ways more interesting...

I've told a few friends about these facts of life and some of them believed me, some didn't. But one once asked "So...it happened to your dad, when he was how old? When's it going to happen to you?"

And I swallowed hard and laughed it off.
