There still are Asiatic lions, but nowhere near that far east. There were European lions but those are completely extinct now. I believe the estimated original range of the Asiatic lion was almost entirely in the area surrounding the Persian Gulf and east only to India. Today they are found only in the Gir Forest, in the state of Gujarat, and number less than 500 in the wild.
