Hmm. To me, they're no uglier than any other mammal. Fruit bats are especially cute.

I'm pretty sure my bat has no realistic bearing at all, I didn't use any reference. But what I was thinking of when I drew it ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/a/aa/20050927074608!California_leaf-nosed_bat.jpg ) does not strike me as ugly either! So I think the ugliness or beauty of a creature is very up to the perspective. Even spectral bats, which are sometimes regarded as the most terrifying thing ever, have a lot of appeal to me.
