Sergeenxt Thanks for getting me motivated to write, I hope you like it man.
As always feedback/criticism is always welcome.
I sat down on the cold wooden floor, and I could feel the small nip on the tip of my snout as I drank some water from my canteen. I could see my breath exiting my mouth with each exhale I did, very soon it will be warmer, and that worries me. I’ve made sure to break any ice statues I saw outside, to maybe put a dent in their numbers even if said dent is not even noticeable. I let out a small sigh before opening my knapsack to see what supplies I had left. I ruffled through and counted three cans of beans, four cans of soup, ten granola bars, one extra bottle of water, some spare rope, one lighter, a can opener and a single old first aid kit. I was good on food for a few days, but I cannot rely on looting buildings in this area forever, I need to get a move on and soon. I put my items back in my bag before picking up my metal baseball bat, it’s funny I got this bat signed by one of the Downtown Hyenas players, and it would have been worth so much, but money is useless now, so I might as well use it to keep me living longer. I hoisted my pack onto my back before I looked out the windows, I didn’t see anything roaming about in the snow so the coast was clear. I exited the door and made my way down the icy steps, as I did so I took out my journal and wrote, that I looted all, the buildings on the street now I had to make my way further into town. Gods, I would like to avoid going in too far as that’s where all the worst monsters reside, but the loot can be worth it, high risk possibly high reward. I let out a sigh before I adjusted my bag and made my way in the direction of the city, I made sure to dispatch any creatures still frozen by the cold on the way, I don’t want them being a threat when they thaw out anyways.
Upon making my way closer to the city, the number of frozen statues I saw was becoming noticeably larger. I made sure to destroy all their heads to guarantee they won’t be an issue later, and I swear I saw some of them move a little, which is not a good sign if that’s the case. It took me a few hours to clear out a large perimeter near a house that looked more defensible than the others around. In this world, there are no second chances, I have one shot at living and I don’t want to fuck it up, so I have to be extra careful when finding a place to stay for the night. I was losing light, and I needed to make sure the house was secure and cleared out; they don’t become statues indoors. I went to open the front door, and it gave me a large amount of resistance, the door was locked. The apocalypse happens, and in you’re rushing, you lock the door before going? Really? It’s understandable, I guess, some people don’t want to lose their valuables, but still, this shits obnoxious. Maybe the owners forgot to lock the back entrance in their panic, so I made my way to the back of the house to hopefully get in that way. The back door rattled as I attempt to open it, also locked, fucking shit, there has to be another way in, I looked around to see if I could spot another way inside. If the world hadn’t gone to shit, I would be looking pretty sketchy right now, thinking like that got a small chuckle out of me.
After a few minutes of circling, I saw a partially open window on the top floor, and I could climb a nearby tree to get onto the roof to access it, haven’t climbed a tree for a long, long time. If I can remember the last tree I climbed was when I was ten years old, the branch broke, and I fell and broke my arm, which deterred me from climbing trees until I got older when I didn’t have the time to do stuff like that anymore. It took me a few attempts to climb my way up the tree and onto the roof, but I managed to do it without too much issue, although I admit I was a tad scared since I could hear the branches creaking and groaning under my weight. On the roof, I was able to slide the window open and make my way inside, and it was dark and musty, I could smell the stench of rotting flesh, curse this nose of mine sometimes. The door from the bathroom I was in was open, I looked both ways in the hallway, the left side had two doors, both on the same side opposite of the bathroom, and the right only had one door and the staircase leading down to the main floor. The smell was coming from the farthest door on the left, and I gagged as I made my way closer to the foul stench, my bat at the ready, I stood outside the closed door my heart was racing. I slowly opened the door to try and be quiet, but the door had other plans as it creaked upon being opened. I froze my ears twitched as I tried to listen for movement of any kind after a minute of silence, I made my way into the room, the sight was less than stellar. Sitting before me was the corpse of a tiger, blood splattered on the wall behind him a gun resting in his lap, I could see a bite mark on his shoulder. The person couldn’t take it anymore and decided to go out well he was still himself, I can respect that choice, I’ll have to deal with the body once I finish making sure this place is safe though. I picked up the magnum from the tiger's lap after I poked it to make sure he was dead and not just faking it, you can never be too sure with still bodies. The magnum seemed in good condition only a small amount of dust on it, but that shouldn’t pose an issue, I checked the ammunition situation it only had one bullet, which didn’t add up. Why would this man load two bullets if he was going to shoot himself, was it incase he missed? I looked around the room from where I stood, and my heart skipped a beat when I noticed the empty seat across from the corpse, I readied my bat. My body was shaking with fear as the tiger strains were always extremely aggressive and deadly. I either needed to leave now or find it before it found me, I couldn’t afford to get even a scratch or I would end up like the corpse next to me. I slowly backed out of the room before closing the door, and I needed to focus my canine ears to listen in on everything in the house. As I focused I could hear the creaking and groaning as the house settled, I could hear birds outside chirping and winding blowing, concentrate focus on the inside. After a few seconds, I heard the sounds of slow footsteps on the main floor. Found it!
I slowly made my way down the hallway and to the stairs leading to the main floor, the sun was still shinning inside, giving me just enough light to see the creature shambling around. If these stairs fucking creaked even just a little, that thing would notice me, and that would spell very bad news. I assessed the situation, it was getting late, and if I attempted to try and find a safer location for the night, it would end up being even riskier, this thing needed to be dead, well deader. I made my way down the steps slowly, and I remembered reading somewhere that if stepping on the stairs to stay close to the wall to reduce the creaking. I could hear the quiet creaking of each step as I descended downwards, my heart racing faster and faster, the closer to the creature I got, it still unaware of my presence. This moment was the scariest of my life, and if even one thing went wrong, it could very well be over for me. After a very stressful minute of slowly descending the staircase, I saw the back of the creature, and it was of a feminine build, she wore a slightly tattered dress and heels. I noticed the bite and claw marks on her legs, something short must have gotten her pretty bad, I held my breath as I slowly approached her from behind, I couldn’t dwell on what got her. She still hadn’t noticed me by the time I got behind her, I redied my bat and swung as hard as I could, I heard a sickening crack as her body got sent into the wall with the force of the blow. I went in for another swing and brought the bat down hard denting the skull as I heard a sickening crunch, the body lay completely still, I did it, I sighed a bit before sitting on the ground leaning against the counter in the room. My legs felt weak, I needed a breather before I searched the rest of the house, I can never get used to doing that no matter how often it happens. I sat down for a few minutes before I got feeling back in my legs and was able to stand again, I looked around the main floor checking each room to make sure nothing else was in here with me. After a few minutes of searching on the main floor, I found no trace of anything else on the main floor, and now it was time to reinforce the house. I took towels from the bathroom and covered all the windows on the main floor that could let a wandering creature spot me, with that done I dragged the corpse of the undead monster outside so I didn’t have to look at it. Once I cleaned my hands in the toilet, a bit nasty, but with no running water, it was better than wasting drinking water, I heated a can of beans with my lighter and had that to eat for dinner. The house had a large amount of canned food and water and was pretty well defensible so I could stay here for a few weeks maybe longer. As I finished my can and drank some water, it was beginning to get darker as night came, it was time to go to bed. Checking the other two rooms, maybe there was a place I could use as a makeshift bedroom where I didn’t have to sleep where a corpse was.
As I made my way up the stairs, I decided to go into the room just at the top of the stairs first. As I opened the door, I heard an airy hiss as I felt an extremely sharp pain on my leg, I let out a shout as I looked down and saw a baby tiger biting and clawing my leg. Its face covered in new and old blood, it had a large bite mark on its side its guts dangling outward. My body entered panic mode, I kicked the kid off my leg and went for a swing, but my knee buckled under the pain, causing me to collapse. As I started to stand, it jumped at me again, and I put my hand up to push it away, but the child bit down, severing some fingers. The pain caused me to let out another scream, and tears were flowing down my face as I cried, the child jumped at me again. I took my good hand and grabbed my bat swinging it at the child and missed again as it sunk its teeth and claws into my shoulder, adrenaline was pumping through my body hard at this point. I ripped the kid off and stood up fast, ignoring the pain I smashed its face with a clean swing that finally connected, I just kept swinging and swinging until my bat slipped out of my bloody hands. I collapsed onto the floor sobbing in pain. After a minute I was able to force myself to my feet and dragged myself to the bedroom with the corpse, I sat down across from it and stared at it for a while, the feeling of pain was leaving me as it started getting colder. I started to cry again as I wrote something in my journal before taking the magnum and putting the barrel in my mouth.
There are no second chances.
