In desert regions where bones bake in the arid sun, life still exists. The Spine-backed tortoise has learned to survive on little water, seeking shelter in the bones of those who lost the fight with nature. Their shells sport three pale ridges that resemble vertebrae, thus their common name. They're a very small species of turtle. Despite not being strong enough to push rocks or travel far for sustenance, their small size comes in handy. They can get caught in tumble weeds, able to use them as transportation.
