I commissioned the super excellent
Nawka for this one. Thanks so much, Nawka!
It’s your first solo business trip, and of course absolutely everything is going wrong. A mix-up with your flight delayed the first leg of your journey enough that it caused a bewildering cascade of rebookings and carrier changes. At your final layover location (which isn’t even in the same city it was going to be in at the start of the day), you learn that your luggage was misrouted along the way, and you won’t be reunited for up to 24 hours. Worse, your last flight has been delayed again, which is going to cause you to miss your transfer to the transdimensional train, and the next one out won’t see you arriving in the Forest until well after midnight.
Fortunately, your company’s support staff have been hard at work clearing the way for you as best as they can throughout the day. All of your new boarding passes are waiting for you on your phone, and Shift-Tec knows that you’ll be arriving late. Ms. Afolabi, the facility manager for the building where you’ll be staying, has even volunteered to stay up to check you in.
20 hours into your “short travel day,” you find yourself on the train, obsessing over the final details of your presentation to Director Longfeather. You might not have any changes of clothing, but at least you still have your carry-on bag; it would have been a catastrophe to lose your laptop! Shift-Tec doesn’t distribute to your home ‘verse yet, and your company could really stand to gain a huge foothold in the market if you can secure this exclusivity agreement.
When you finally arrive at the virtually deserted Forest train station, it’s all you can do to keep your eyes open. There’s a car waiting for you, thank goodness, and it’s not a long drive to your accommodations. Along the way, though, your anxiety starts to get the best of you. Whether it’s the exhaustion, the stress of the day, the importance of your presentation, putting your hosts out by arriving so late, or some nightmare mishmash of all of the above, it’s getting harder to keep your cool. With the building coming into view, you resolve to use an old standby trick to deal with business nerves: imagining the other person in their underwear!
When you step out of the car and into the low light of the after-hours lobby, you find waiting for you a tall antelope, looking every bit the sharp professional that you don’t feel at all like, with your tired eyes and rumpled clothes. As you cross the room towards her, you have time to put your anxiety reduction plan into action…

It can be awfully rough to take such a long business trip, especially one made even longer by delays and mix-ups! Fortunately, the Forest will end up being a lovely place for the viewpoint character here to visit, and not just because they met Ms. Afolabi! ^^
The presentation will end up going great, and they'll be able to lock up that distribution contract. Not too shabby, especially considering how nervous they were when they showed up!
