Jabba The Hutt: name-dropped since New Hope, talked up and hyped for the first few minutes of Jedi; then the cymbal-crash that this bad-assed, never-cross-him space gangster was a disgusting slime-covered slug the size of an elephant. What is "subverting audience expectations", Alex?
Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker: always speculated on. teased maddeningly in Empire, the whole scene of the helmet disassembly and face reveal is so quiet and gentle and yet heavy at the same time. Even if the make-up job was not horrifying, it was still a very real soft Wow Moment.
And then...
The Emperor: mentioned in New Hope, holographically teased in Empire, here he comes finally in the robe...ambling down a shuttle ramp like he's your elderly uncle coming down the concourse at the airport. Yes McDiarmad pulled the perfect amount of dramatic ham for a melodrama Big Bad once he got to the throne room, but that reveal was... well, it was.
