Cooner jumped enthusiastically into the Sword and Sorcery genre. The wizard doesn't actually have his eyes closed, but his eyes are flashing with Power. I would probably have my eyes closed, if the enemy was scary enough. That's why I'd prefer area-effect spells that do 1d6 of damage per caster level.
