The principal is sound. The execution needs a little development.

A combination lathe-mill would be more successful I feel. You could use the tail stock to keep the pumpkin captive against the head stock whilst the mill did its work. In addition, the lathe could be used to cut the 'lid' from the top of the pumpkin.

I'm struggling to devise a means of automating the 'coring' of the pumpkin. Post carving and 'lidding', perhaps a carefully calibrated plasma cutter........

How do you have the endmill running at so few rippums that it snags in the pumpkin?

Probably should've secured the pumpkin with some straps first. And probably used a shallower bit -- if you just shave off the outer rind, the light from inside can still shine through the softer inner flesh without needing to make a full hole.

I feel like someone out there will want to figure out a better drill bit for carving pumpkins. =P One that's less likely to snag if your RPM dips for some reason.
