I came up with an interesting challenge for creating characters in Dungeons and Dragons as well as character art that I thought would be fun to try and do.
The rules were:
1. Roll 3d6 for Ability Scores. No rerolls.
2. Straight Rolls - Do not assign the ability score numbers, instead go straight through.
1st Roll - Strength, 2nd Roll - Dex, 3rd - Con, 4th - Int, 5th - Wis, 6th - Cha
3. Randomly Choose a Race and a Background
Can use PHB races, but can include races from other sources.
4. Choose a class you think best fits your Ability Scores.
5. Build a Character.
And so, when I did this, I ended up with:
Race: Goblin, Background: Sailor
Str: 14, Dex: 13, Con: 8, Int: 18, Wis: 6, Cha: 13
And so in the end , I made Stilk, the Goblin Wizard.
Stilk's was taken away from his tribe at a very young age and was sold off as a slave to a wealthy noble from overseas. He was forced to work, but he was given very little in the way of food and he started to suffer, unsure if he would survive for long.
Everything would change one fateful night when the ship was raided by pirates. Stilk was taken by the pirate along with the ship's supplies and treasure, and he fears that he would have been killed or sold off, but he was ultimately saved by the pirate's first mate: a hobgoblin named Rek "The Marked".
Rek would promise that goblin would be fed and taken care of, so long as he was willing to pull his own weight, which Stilk was willing to do so long as he was able to get proper food and protection.
During his time onboard, Stilk eventually found some old tomes stored in the ship's hold. They were amongst the loot plundered from different ships, but surprisingly to he goblin, he was able to read them. What was amazing to everyone, he had started to control the arcane arts.
Because of his life at sea and from the early years of abuse, he doesn't have the greatest constitution, getting sick easily, which was made worse due to being at sea all the time.
His greatest weakness however is his naivety. He spent so much time on the seas that he has no real sense of the real world, unable to read people or survive much on his own.
He had spent many years with the pirates, until something happened and many of the crew started to mutiny. The crew started to fight amongst themselves. Rek took the small gremlin and put him into one of the lifeboats, intending to escape together, but she would be jumped by the mutineers before the lifeboat was let go.
Stilk was left adrift for days before he managed to find some relief when the lifeboat washed ashore. With no other choice, he would go off and try to find the closest settlement he could for some kind of help or to find some place to stay, unsure of what he would find there.
It was an interesting idea and I may revisit it. And I also invite anyone else to give this a try if they would like.
