The Arkkin. The ethereal cosmic dragons. 3 concept sketch...
these are a few concepts for my Arkkin creature. a creature that I want to continue to develop! it is now an completely open species, meaning that if you like this creature you are free to draw paint and even ask others for commission work. I only ask that a little credit is given!
I wrote some key facts about these creatures, in the future I will refine whatever lore I have built up and build further on the creature as well! Have any more questions bout this creature? let me know!
BIRTH
Arkkins are born from anomalies in locations that eventually manifest as dragon looking creatures. seeming to be born out of the ether and manifesting in what is described as cold black miasmas that pop up in varying locations in which after a time, the shape of the creatures take form. They are “born” with the seemingly random knowledge of various subjects and languages, some more than others. it is said that arkkin exhibit knowledge and personalty of people that have passed.
PHYSICAL ANCHOR/BIOLOGY
The arkkin is more than just its physical draconic form, its body only serving to ground it in perceivable reality too humans and other creatures. This form serves as a vessel and a seed of sorts from which the Arkkin is able to "take hold" of matter in an environment as an epicenter. this body needs to feed like any other organism and thus arkkin prey exclusively on the eldritch abominations and demons that exist within many arks.
TRANSCENDENCE/OMNIPOTENCE
Arkkin have the ability to "take hold" and become the environments they inhabit, (as much a part of the environment as the environment becomes part of them). With this ability they gain control over all the the matter present, living and otherwise. They can cause various anomalies described as poltergeist-like, causing matter in the environment to move at will, but also change and shift it to impossible forms and states. They are capable of causing various spatial and temporal distortions as well that warp time and space to their choosing. An arkkin is practically omnipotent and the control over an area can vary spanning rooms to several miles and is functionally infinite. The amount and span of control is limited only by their emphatic abilities that can cause great distress to said arkkin if their manipulations over an environment affect living individuals with some level of sapience and pain.
EMPATHY
Arkkin are able to feel what another individual feels. Whatever damage is caused to an arkkin is also mirrored on the assailant mentally. seldom physical damage is also seen on the assailant if the empathetic connection is strong enough. This applies to the arrkin themselves as harming sapient creatures causes mental and physical distress to the arkkin to a small degree. Those with less developed empathetic responses affect an arkkin less however, thus an arkkin will find it much easier to defend themselves against those with less developed empathy. This ability is theoretically the reason arkkin can't become fully omnipotent as their reach is a bubble only limited by the existence of other creatures that might be considered "empathetic". Creations free of reason or holding no empathetic connection to others are completely under the control of the Arrkkin and an uncountably infinite span of space can be under their control if no empathetic living things are present.
ANOMALOUS FORM AND SIZE
Arkkin seem to distort light in subtle ways. lensing effects such as ignoring parallax and angle distortions and features that are exaggerated as if viewing the individual arkkin from a fish eye or telescopic lens. Light that bounces off an Arkkin also seems to ignore objects in space, as individuals describe a shimmer behind walls and the "glowing" of amber eyes behind many solid barriers. Some describe slight coronas and even what appears as chromatic aberrations around the creatures. In addition, measuring an arkkins size and volume yields varying results. The shape of a arkkin is anomalous seeming to change size and perspective often. Physical dimensions are not easily measured by themselves and only make visual sense when compared to it's environment and the viewer. arkkin out in the open are described as having heads larger than elephants while arkkin observed within small abandoned streets are described as being the length of a city bus. Even so when observed in a single location Random changes to size are described ranging from a few inches too meters. observing foot tracks show that the track size does indeed change suggesting that the size changes are not just illusionary however weight distribution does not vary as greatly and larger tracks seem have less weight behind them for the suggested size of the creature. .
POSSESSION
Arkkins can merge with individuals though not necenecraly taking control of the being those being affected are given the same abilities as well as forming a telepathic connection with the Arkkin. Possession is more often mutual as the possessed can more often than not reject the arkkin.
DEATH
An arkkin can, if caught off guard in its physical state, can be disposed of, if enough physical distress is caused to an arkkin the creature will deteriorate, its body completely disintegrating to base components however after some time they remataralize.
TIME SPACE HORDING
An arkkin much like a classical dragon is very lonesome preferring to keep to themselves, besides collecting various objects that might interest them an arkkin will “take hold” of an environment, in which they are able to project their beings into the various objects and lands that might surround them. This allows them to see through the environment itself and keep various happenings of said locations as echos of the past. Such an ability allows them create apparitions of past events and to some extent even effect the present.
HUMAN/ARKKIN RELATIONSHIP
Being that they are essentially big scary dragons and that arkkin are empaths being seen by too many people would simply be uncomfortable as the arkkin would in turn also start to feel the unease... Humans also don't really know if these creatures are a threat so civil servants like police and military are not just going to let an arkkin wander amongst people. Otherwise Arkkin have no problems interacting with others

Oh you have no idea.... I've been watching your progress on them and chomping at the bit hoping you'd make them an open species ^_^ My character is an Ice/Shadow dragon mix, and she often mimics species she finds appealing. Though she has had to kill various subjects in the past to figure out how to turn into something ((I don't like the entire "you see it you copy it without knowing how it is)), the Arkkin's ability to mind meld so to speak with another would give her a non-lethal way to learn about their biology and let her learn their forms without causing any of them harm. If it's okay with you, I had intended to say Nisi met one, fell in love with the creatures form, and while possessed in her desire to learn more, used the link to figure out just how they were designed and become one herself. It would only be temporary, Nisi would always transform back, but while transformed she would, essentially, be an Arkkin ^_^
I absolutely love the idea of the species, i just have a couple of questions if you dont mind.
Could you maybe give a more in depth explanation of the anatomy of the species? Talking about the gross anatomy mostly. This is assuming they have a set of basic features that dont change.
Can you discribe the optimal type of living condition for the species?
Do they migrate at all or stay in one location?
Do they alter their terrain in any way to make it more optimal for them to live in after gaining control?
What energy sources does it draw power from? What energy do they even use?

The physical anatomy of the body is not that different from creatures found on earth, not something I have focused on much when I was figuring out the creature any way.
when the creatures manifest, they develop the capability to survive in the climate they manifest in. so when they "spawn" in a location that location is optimal for them.
They tend to stay in the vicinity of the location they manifest in. they gain control of an area that can span several miles starting from the epicenter of their creation. Again the only limit to their control over an area is other sapient individuals that fall into this bubble as they can start to feel the emotions of other creatures. this can cause an Arkkin great stress. because of this the creature is some what territorial making sure TOO much intelligent beings don't invade their territory.
They can alter their environments and terrain in many ways though not necessarily out of necessity.

The one above me asked some of the questions I had in mind, but I'd like to add onto them as well.
- What is there disposition to others, such as passive animals, aggressive animals, and other sapient species that might come into contact with them?
- Is there any historical recordings of observations of the Arkkin-- and as a follow up, how long have they existed for in their setting?

- What biological functions do they have? Do they eat, create waste, absorb energy from something, or hunt for anything to sustain themselves?
- You've illustrated them with genitalia and a butt-hole, are they functional at all or are they simply intended to resemble another animal (or, if they pre-date animals, then other animals instead resemble them)
- The idea of mutual possession is interesting, and makes me think they can essentially ride along with another being. What's the full extent of sensations the Arkkin can experience, and what sensation does the creature being possessed feel?
- Now that I think of it.. Can or does the Arkkin feel or seek pleasure, intimacy, or affection? They are not 'born' in the typical sense as they seem to simply manifest wherever, which makes me wonder what reproductive organs (if they even are such) would be used for

To answer the first two questions---in the world I have in mind they inhabit large abandoned human cities as well as more natural environments. The arkkins started to spawn during an anomalous cataclysmic event that left major cities abandoned as occurrences took place that made technology and infrastructure unfeasible (thats another story) but a few years after humans migrated out of these cities the arkkins took hold of these dead zones around the globe being mostly where they spawn. Arkkins are seldom aggressive to any one that ventures into their territory to collect scrap or study the environment but they are more adverse to large operations in these places as it literally starts to feel like insects are picking at them.
as for the other questions.
1-2 The body of the Arkkin is biological or at least seemingly biological. They need to hunt to obtain sustenance but their body can also process plant products. All their biological aspects seem to be functional as for reproduction, non has been recorded but both male and female Arkkins have functioning genitalia.
3- When an Arkkin possess an individual both beings can completely feel each others sensations. Also I should mention that an Arrkin can completely take control of an individual though the chances are less likely if the individual is a more empathetic sort. people with less developed empathy are more predisposed to being controlled by an Arkkin. Also an Arkkin has an easier time hurting some one less empathetic as the empathetic connections to those individuals are less intense.

Oh neat!! So they are living creatures, to some extent, in the sense that they have typical animal needs and are capable of reproduction. I'm intrigued on the setting, and I hope you will continue to flesh out their habitats and world ♥♥

Not specifically romantic intent, but not excluding it either. Sorry if it's kind of weird to ask;;;; I'm kind of enjoying the idea that they have much more functioning parts than I had first presumed.
3. Will we ever see any writing based on someone's encounter with Arkkin? I'm super curious to know what can be gleaned from being possessed, in any capacity, if there is a means to learn more about them non-verbally beyond simply visual observation.

Arkkins are very intelligent, those that wander into an arkkins domain are often times toyed with as the Arrkin purposely twists time and space around an adventures vicinity causing simple streets, woods or buildings to turn into impossible Escher like labyrinths. to avoid being toyed with I believe some people could often bring gifts to these creatures that the Arkkins might horde very much like a classic dragon. some arkkins might take interest in learning the language of the areas they inhabit as well. and most certainly they use their abblites to shape their domain as they see fit.
I will leave this one up to peoples imaginations, since it's actually not something I put to much focus on, but Arkkins don't really have a prejudice and depending on the individual arkkin, one might just have an interest in a human. it is very possible. Again though. its not something I have put a lot of thought into.
I do in fact have a world I am working on, sort of a post catastrophe kind of world. a few years after the arkkin anomaly that caused the collapse of many large cities. the main plot point being that the anomalies besides bringing about the Arkkins also brought forth a mutation in the animal population that sees many regular creatures mutating into having increased intelligence and dexterity. I plan on writing a loose journal based story about humans writing their experiences working for organizations in charge of handling these new animals as well as the anomalous zones these arkkins inhabit.
I will leave this one up to peoples imaginations, since it's actually not something I put to much focus on, but Arkkins don't really have a prejudice and depending on the individual arkkin, one might just have an interest in a human. it is very possible. Again though. its not something I have put a lot of thought into.
