I feel like I was there, in the ether, listening in to history as it was, and was in the making. And as the scene becomes clearer, it's likely I was there in spirit. http://www.mcfannfamilyhistory.org/.....cs/JohnMcF.htm
Now that is just too cool John. I see he died 'in service'. There is an actual monument at the Spartansburg, Pa. cemetery, 'For Those Who Never Came Home'. My own ancestor, who was in the CW, came home in bad shape, and never actually recovered his health. Those times were truly amazing.

Haunting yes... if only people would read and understand that the past repeats itself...
*Smiles... my coats are always missing a button or two...
true story, I was having dinner with my step-mother at one of our town's nicer places, and she looked down to find a button on the floor. She gave it to me and nodded to a fellow sitting at the next table and said, 'Go and ask that man if he's got all his buttons.'
I'm not sure how old I was, but I didn't fall for that one.

I believe I share Colonel Andrews view of politicians. The notion of 'public service' is almost impossible to find among the words spoken by any politician I see of hear. I'm sure it's been this way far longer than I've been aware of 'grown up' things like politics.
I very much like your rendition of the good Colonel. I only wish I could make that vital connection that you make look so easy: an image into a story. You are absolute proof that a picture is worth a thousand words.
So long as none of those words include, "If elected, I promise to-"

Thanks so much Wire... in all honesty, I am very worried for our country. I have never seen so much hate in politics before. Well... perhaps I have, but just not so widespread. Until now chose to ignore it, because the government was still somewhat functioning. If what is happening now were in a Tom Clancy novel, people would think it was good entertainment.
As to an ability, I once looked at a photo taken of Japanese crewmen standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was 'as if' I were standing on the bridge looking down at them. I had to pull myself back. And so went the first time this sort of thing happened to me.
*hugs...

I always find these kind of stories very interesting, your author's voice and general musings manage to come across as quite strong and compelling.
The Colonel seems to have been quite the sensible man for his time based on how you've written him, and the conversation you shared with him was quite insightful, it gives a sense of things that have changed since the 1800s
and things which have, for better or worse, stayed the same.
I also got a chuckle out of his double-take at 'Miss Fox' too.
