First time I heard about that was in a sci-fi show. "Earth: Final Conflict", I believe. They had sensory deprivation prisons. Your eyes are covered, your ears are plugged, and you're submerged in water, with a breathing apparatus I assume, and drugged so that you can't really tell the time. As one escaped "Amoralist" said, "You'd kill for a sound."

I think I'd rather be burned alive. Worst way to die, yes, but at least you're dead afterward. Sen-dep prison sounds like a good way to end up mad, if you weren't already.
