While men dominated most action films of the 70's and 80's, women owned the horror genre, most horror films from that time featured a lone female survivor that came out on top over their pursuers that were legitimately more of a threat than most bad guys from action movies of the time. Some "Final Girls" that stick out to me are Laurie Strode (Halloween), Nancy Thompson (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Alice Hardy (Friday the 13th).
Now I'll admit I haven't seen most Halloween movies, I hear they get pretty bad past the first one but I guess you can say Laurie is the one that really started the Final Girl trend that most slasher films followed afterward.
Nancy is one of the best Final Girls just because of how Wes Craven wrote his female leads, they were mostly independent, capable people that always managed to get one step ahead of their monster, Freddy got fucked up once he stepped foot in the house, tables were definitely turned in the first Nightmare film, Nancy also went on to be a good mentor figure to the remaining Elm street kids in part 3, once again she was a proactive player keeping not only herself alive but to save the lives of the other survivors, sadly she was killed in the end but she did her part excellently.
Alice is a weird one, on one hand she did manage to stave off her pursuer with as much tenacity as Laurie did but on the other hand Laurie was taking on Michael fucking Myers and survived, Alice was dealing with old Pamela Voorhees, who was a legitimate threat due to her unsuspecting nature but by the second film Jason got her. But to be fair she didn't really know what to expect if a Jason ever came after her in any fashion, motherfucker got her in her own home, how he managed to find this chick in 1982 I'll never know, so she's a pretty sympathetic character as well as Pamela really, Friday the 13th is honestly a pretty deep series of films if you really look into it, surface level it's gruesome, unapologetic 80's slasher cheese but there's a weird psychology theme that runs through most of the films but that's a discussion for another time.
Hope you enjoy my little tribute to a few of the badass ladies of the horror genre.

Ah, yes, the heroes that manage to survive. At least for the first encounter.
Considering anyone would be pretty likely to die going back to the things they barely survived through to help others, they make some pretty tough sacrifices as well.
While some get the chances more than others, they're all quite valiant in their own right.
