In North-Eastern Native American mythologies, notably in the Anishinaabe, the underwater panther (sometimes lynx) is one of the most powerful beings from the underworld, with the face and the paws of a feline but covered in scales with a back bristled in dagger-like spikes, master of all water creatures snakes included. He is said to live on Michipicoten Island in Lake Superior, and his lifelong rival is the thunderbird
