The secrets to resurrection were well hidden. I thought it would be a simple matter to recall a lost soul from the veil of death, but it was a two-step process. First, a body has to be constructed to act as a vessel for the retrieved life-essence. The replacement corpse works best when it is created from the remains of the person who is trying to be revived; a new figure or form could be used, but that will no doubt cause some sort of shock for the recipient...but I wonder what would happen if you put a human soul in a drayg body? Would the human naturally know how to control the tail? Or even wings? Sorry, sorry -- getting ahead of myself. The container must be preserved using a manner of oromancy spells to ensure that it does rot before the spark of life is thrust into it. With a physical shape created, the easy part of resurrection is said and done.
The hardest part comes in pulling the life essence of the deceased through the thin walls that separate dimensions from one another. Certis Nusquam happens to be the name of the realm where the dead go. It is an...oddly thorough place. Souls are categorized by species, but otherwise, no judgment awaits them. They are free to mingle with others of their own kind. The keepers of the realm, the Volcaire, ensure that the souls stay categorized. It was their primary task, and they continue to perform it with vehement fervor. The spell to recall and target a specific individual is daunting, but as long as you have memories and items that once belonged to them, you will easily find the right person. One you have found the soul, the final part is guiding the life essence to its new body. After that, the spell is complete.
I mentioned that resurrection was a two-step process. I should revise that statement and declare it a three-step process. Once the individual is revived, the Volcaire will come. I mentioned that they are the keepers of the dead. They are more like...managers. Without them, a soul would be lost after its host body perished. Thus, when you pull an oro back from their dimension, they tend to grow agitated. They enforce the laws of death, and do not take kindly to those who defile or break those laws. Not only will the Volcaire try to claim the individual who has returned to life, they will take the life of the caster and any gathered nearby. If you are not strong enough, you too will die. Therefore, it is my humble advice that you do not take this magic lightly. To revive the dead is miraculous, and wondrous -- but what good is it if your deed can be so easily erased?
