Oro. It was a simple word that had simple connotations. In the old tongue, Arunovian, oro meant "living creature." The word had been...updated by scholars of the Arunovian Empire, and in a modern context, "oro" referred to the member of a civilized race: a human, an elf, a dwarf, a gnome, a drayg and lastly, an orc. Orin, the plural of oro, is what the collected consciences of the kingdoms of Altreak called themselves. This new meaning didn't exactly conflict with the old world implication the word held -- at least, not for the average citizen. Practitioners of magic have a different dilemma: Oromancy is the school of magic dedicated to manipulating life and death. Ancient Arunovian mages were the first to discover the uses of Mana in healing by converting it to positive energy, as well as discovering the uses of Mana in harming by converting it to negative energy. Because of the impacts positive energy and negative energy had on living -- and undead -- creatures, any spell dealing with these powerful effects was dubbed "orin salemni", literally "living creature spells."
Oromancy is often in the most unique position of all schools of magic: the common citizen both praises and reviles the discipline. Many are aware of the effects positive energy has on a living creature: its soothing heal can bring one back from the brink of death, clear any terrible curse or disease inflicting oneself, and it can even drive back the undead! But the same school of magic is responsible for rotting away tissue, turning loved ones into mindless zombies and even snuffing out one's life with but a few arcane gestures and words. The general population has always referred to spells related to negative energy as "necromancy" or even death magic. A few cities in Altreak's history had even banned necromancy, against the wishes of the High Wizardry Council, who had been trying to edify the general population about oromancy as a whole.
While many are aware that both healing spells and harming spells are part of the same school of magic, old-fashioned folk will still refer to the other half of oromancy as death magic.
