Bunnies - both the wild kind and the domestic / pet breeds - are surprisingly complex and interesting animals when you get to know them some. That was part of what Adams was going for in Watership Down. It was a mismash of both primitive human anthropology and wild rabbit behavior and it worked on both counts.
