Green Horizon/Unity - World Map - Political
This is the political map of my "Green Horizon" and "Unity" settings.
The story starts in New York in unity territory. The city had an automated maintenance system made of nanotech and polymer fibers that could become anything in order to fix the city. After the climate cascade weapons devastated civilization the maintenance systems continued working... eventually becoming sentient. While they cannot set foot on central park and are trapped by the weather grid, the Unity are doing everything they can to bring order to society and rebuild it better than before.
In the Americas while the civilian population has been weakened by global warming, radiation exposure, and a somewhat toxic atmosphere the most conventional of the governments struggles to maintain control. Militech, an extension of the military, roams the plains in exo-suits that keep their riders safe.
The Eurasian Federation, after seeing the collapse of civilization at the hands of technology has chosen a more naturalistic approach. Here Nature has returned more than most other places and it is populated by a deeply spiritual people. In some cases they used the last vestiges of their technology to change their genes to be more like the animals of the world before, to be more atune with nature.

Madagascar has always been in France's sphere of influence since the colonial invasion in 1885, and even since the independence in 1960. One thing though, the government that was toppled last year (rumors say, with help by France) was more strongly pro-american than pro-french. There were even jokes that Pdt. Ravalomanana's ultimate goal was to make Madagascar one of the United States...
Culturally, I guess it wouldn't change much. Madagascar has a very insular, very foreigner-wary culture that doesn't care much for international contact unless it means money...

If you need reasons for the U.S. to want Madagascar: there are rumors of large oil deposits around. We've got some uranium, too. And Antsiranana Bay is one of the largest natural ports in the world, with a shipyard already there that sometimes services warships from the U.S. and French fleets.
The rings represent the after effects of a "climate cascade" weapon. Essentially, a sort of toxic hurricane of anti-terraforming materials penned in by a network of prototype weather manipulation towers to keep them from spreading. I'm surprised I didn't put that on the key, though that was years ago, hehe.
