Actually we were there to see "Jojo Rabbit", but seeing Midway is on our "To See" list as my brother likes WWII movies too.

the problem I have with midway it seems less like a historical movie and more like a action movie with bits of history thrown in, being directed by the person who made Independence Day just ads to that sense. I'm hoping I'm wrong in this case.

We'll have to see. I felt kind of disappointed with "Pearl Harbor" because it was more special effects and not much story. The analogy with "Independence Day" is a good one as movies featuring all out assaults with thousands of computer generated aircraft and battle machines has now become a "Formula."

Pearl harbor wasn't very historically accurate , The Japanese never fired on civilians or the hospital. The best portrayal of the attack is Tora Tora Tora.

Wellllll… As with most of these "Historic-Drama" movies, they never let the actual facts get in the way of telling the story with more fancy, special effects. My major pet peeve was with "The Right Stuff" for very much the same reasons.

As long as it *does* have actual history in it I'll be happy.

Pearl Harbor was awful. It was a crappy two hour romance movie with twenty minutes of action right at the end.

Tora! Tora! Tora! is still the best Pearl Harbor movie. It shows the planning that went into the attack. A remake of that with modern special effects would be awesome.

The original Midway was also very good for similar reasons. Purists may complain that some of the planes were wrong, but the tension as the rival admirals tried to out-guess each other was palpable.

30 Seconds Over Tokyo was another great one. I could swear they had cameras on those planes.

I agree Tora tora tora is amazing, but I have never seen midway or 30 seconds over toyko

I recommend both. I liked them for much the same reasons - authentic history well told.

I'm kinda surprised you don't have a bush pilot type character, they were very popular in the interwar period.

I did a few Illos of Bush Pilots and Mechanics for the Spontoon Islands website years and years ago, but I never drew up a Bush Pilot character... Yet.

Yeah. They set these stand up as well as any production, along with careful lighting and huge backdrops. All I'd need is a parachute harness, a seat belt, a communications set, and a set of pilot's wings.
