The hero twins go forth to play ball against the lords of Xibalba, the underworld. Note ceremonial axe on right: that design went all the way from the Maya heartland, all the way up the coast and the Sierra Madre O., into Texas, the Mississippi valley, and to the proto-cities of Ohio. Other ideas, like "building pyramids is most awesome" followed the form of Mesoamerican art.

I read to my dismay that that probably was not true except maybe in certain odd situations...too bad! However, sometimes the opposing king was used as the ball, if some of the bas-reliefs reflect reality.
I was very lucky to see the first post-code-breaking exhibition of Mayan art, at the Kimbell museum in Fort Worth, Texas: "The Blood of Kings". It turbocharged my already-significant interest in the Precolumbian world. So in reading everything I can get my hands on, I've found that my cherished idea of sacrificing the winning team is probably not the way it happened.
On the other hand, they played a lot of ball back then--not just on ceremonial occasions, but all the time.
It makes me want to see if I can get a baseball game going where everybody is wearing Mexican fursuits--jaguar, deer, opossum, ocelot, etc...with lots of fake quetzal feathers.

I confess I may be guilty of regurgitating popular myths, since I have never researched this subject in detail.
However, I do think fursuit ball games could be a win - provide there was some suitable cooling system installed. I'd hate to get involved in any strenuous physical activity while covered in the equivalent of a shag carpet!
