This is a more detailed backstory for Keegyn the kobold crossbowman for a pathfinder session I'm in.
Keegyn was a kobold that lived in a forested kobold tribe, called the Silentleaf Tribe near Red Leaf in Ustalav. When he was born, he wasn’t as strong, tall, smart or even as fast as the other kobolds, and he was mediocre with all weapons, he was a runt of the litter. The other kobolds didn’t really pay him much attention since he wasn’t very useful, so Keegyn grew up mostly by himself as a loner not trusted with any tasks of importance. And because of this when a kobold paid him even a small amount of attention he would tend to stick around them, which made the others avoid him more, to the point where some got together and decided to have Keegyn go on a mission.
Keegyn was finally allowed to go onto a scouting mission with the other kobolds, he was so excited as this was his first mission, although even through his excitement he was still able to notice that the other kobolds going with him were mostly other runts and a two capable kobolds, but he decided to pay it no mind maybe it was a training mission to help them all improve. After a few days of travel, the group bumped into a small group of three adventurers setting up camp. The two capable kobolds made a circle with the others and planned out the attack, four of the melee runts would attack from all sides and Keegyn would take a vantage point in a tree with his bow as the capable two would take two other points in trees with their bows, they were outnumbered with the element of surprise against them so it should be easy.
Keegyn got into position, he waited for the signal, and when it happened he fired a shot as the others ran in, but he didn’t see the two kobold leaders shoot from their spots, the runts on the ground got defeated with ease. Keegyn looked to try and spot the others and as he saw them running off in the distance he ate an arrow to the shoulder and fell out of the tree. Keegyn was pretty scared once he looked up to see two somewhat annoyed people pointing swords at him, they looked at the cowering kobold then looked at each, the had a small argument before they tied Keegyn up and threw him in the back of the carriage with a few of the other runts that lived.
After that Keegyn went through a series of being shoved around places and sleeping in a cage waiting for whatever fate would befall him. Around a week later he was led in chains onto a small wooden stage with the other kobolds and a couple of creatures, a few humans and other races all wearing somewhat fancy clothing stared at them as they got into a row. A man began yelling towards the crowd and every time someone in the crowd raised a sign and said something the man yelled again until no one raised a sign and someone in the line would be led off the stage, this happened for sometime before Keegyn was yanked by the chain on his neck towards and exit, two people talked before his chain was handed over to the other. Keegyn was put into the back of a small carriage and he and the man travelled for a day to a medium-sized house in the woods. Keegyn expected the worst but to his surprise, the man just showed him to a room with a bed and walked off. The kobold was surprised at first and was a little cautious of the man but that faded once he brought him some good food.
His master introduced himself as Mordekaiser and treated Keegyn very well, Keegyn spent two years with the man, he was taught how to read, write and speak both common and undercommon, cook and even how to use a crossbow. The only rules he was told to follow was to never enter within the right half of the house which was always behind a door, Keegyn not wanting to lose the trust of the man listened to this rule, he was curious but he was able to control that curiosity. But one day as he returned from hunting some rabbits to cook he saw the door wide open, as he entered the house things were all over the place, it was a mess someone had come in and trashed everything. As he ran around the house he saw the always closed door broken and slightly off its hinges, he always listened to his master's words but this time he had to break them. The room was large with a lot of tables broken glass and burnt or ripped up paper and books everywhere, Keegyn looked around to hopefully find some information on what happened but all he could find was a journal with his master's name on it. The journal had a lot of pages ripped out of it and was in a language he couldn’t read, but maybe it could have a clue as to what happened or maybe the whereabouts of Mordekaiser.
Keegyn packed up a small sack of goods and cooking supplies into a sack and got his crossbow, he would find master Mordekaiser or at least what happened to him, but first, he needed to translate this journal it was all he really had to go off on. He travelled for quite some time and after some not so nice experiences with people found a wizard to translate it, but to the wizards surprise he couldn’t translate it with his magic and even divination magic didn’t work, it was very odd. Keegyn thanked the wizard and continued his journey hopefully someone could find out how to translate this book and what it was hiding that it was so hard to do so, something was off about this and he wanted to get to the bottom of it.
On this journey, he bumped into a strange-looking man who wore a lot of fancy looking clothing, he too couldn’t translate the journal, but he was very friendly to the kobold, which made Keegyn want to travel with him, he stayed close and offered to cook food and everything, after some pressing the man agreed, and so his journey continued as the two travelled into the direction of Virisia.
