The free come to the caged
My guinea pig and his friend, both sadly deceased and even more sadly didn't get on well if they were in the same cage together when they got older, but they liked sitting next to each other when they were outside.
My piggy you could let free in the garden if you kept an eye on him and he generally wouldn't run away unless there was something that scared him and he'd just leg it to the nearest bush, but wasn't too hard to catch.
Soon he just sat next to you and came to you for safety.
