The thing is a bit of an oddball compared to other Nissans and Datsuns within that time period. It is a lovable kind of oddball compared to, say, the S-Cargo which is just plain weird.

How cool that someone brought it to the show! I couldn't help but be drawn to the characters on the number plate. When you read it right to left, it shows the town in which the car was first registered, which turns out to be Tatsuno, in Nagano Prefecture. The number too is interesting. It indicates that the car is a special purpose vehicle. :)

JDM Nissan made a number of "retro" and/or "funky" styled cars in the 90's
The Nissan Pao was one of what became known as Nissan "Pike cars" due to their origins at the Nissan Pike factory.

We see some of them in Australia as they were often grey imports from Japan.

The AZ-1 isn't too bad, but I would like to think that Mazda could have done better.

The S-Cargo was oddly popular as a novelty type delivery van on the grey market here in Australia :3
