"Mmm, looks like that storm you predicted is blowing in..." Fate mused aloud, a paw over his eyes as he watched the dark clouds looming from over the mountains he and his large dragon companion Bunsen were traveling along, a visible curtain of rain falling from the clouds in thick sheets. "That's seriously uncanny, you know, how you're able to predict the weather so precisely," he said with an impressed air as he turned his gaze upwards to Bunsen, who was also eyeing the approaching storm clouds with an appraising air.
"Comes from a lifetime of attunement to the world's winds, my little bunny," the dragon answered with a snorting chuckle, soft plumes of smoke rising from his nostrils. "Being our second home, we dragons have an instinctive ability to tell just what weather the skies have in store for us."
"If you say so," Fate answered with a chuckle as he once again returned his gaze to the approaching rain clouds. "Hmm, they're moving in fairly swiftly. I imagine they'll be upon us in less than half an hour. Hmm, not enough time to set up a shelter, and the nearest town is still several days away..." It was clear from the rabbit's expression that he did not look forward to getting soaked.
"Oh, that's not a problem! I can always gulp you down and shelter you from the rain in my belly~" the dragon chuckled, flashing his fangs towards the little bunny.
"Aack! D-don't you even start with that now, Bunsen!" Fate protested in what would could only be classified as a nervous, squeaky tone as he eyed the dragon warily.
"Fiiiiine, fine, just teasing you~" the dragon replied with a thoroughly amused rumble in his throat as he watched his bunny companion squirm in that adorably nervous, flustered way of his, leaning in quick to give one of his ears a teasing, friendly slurp with his tongue.
"Ugh, sometimes I honestly can't tell whether you're teasing or genuinely eyeing me up for a snack..." the rabbit muttered, pushing the dragon's snout away. "I still remember how you chose to deal with that band of bandits we were tasked to deal with..." The bunny shivered as memories of the incident flashed through his mind.
"Hey, they were bandits, and there was no specification to bring them in alive," the dragon sniffed. "Plus, I hadn't had anything to eat that whole day. Mmm, they certainly made for delightful meals, wriggling and squirming abo-"
"Alright, alright, no need to go into specifics!" Fate interrupted hastily, an uncomfortable and embarrassing heat rising into his cheeks, pointedly ignoring the dragon's resultant chuckles as he changed the topic. "We still need to figure out a plan for shelter from that oncoming storm. It'll be upon us any minute now."
"Hmm, I think I have an agreeable solution to that dilemma," Bunsen rumbled as he looked around briefly before motioning with a claw to a point just off the dirt path they were traveling down. "Over here, this looks like a good spot."
"A good spot for what?" Fate asked puzzledly.
"A good spot to rest until the rain blows over, you silly rabbit!" Bunsen answered with a chuckle as he curled up and settled down with a muffled thump on the grass.
"Uh, you do realize there's no time for me to set up camp, right?" Fate pointed out with a frown.
"Oh, no need for a tent! I'll just shield you with my wing!" Bunsen replied with a toothy smile, unfurling one of his massive wings to it's full extent, curling it over to act as a makeshift tent.
It was at this point that the first faint drops of rain began to fall, and feeling the discomforting coldness of them on his fur, Fate sighed and said, "Well, it's better than being fully out in the rain, I suppose," hurrying over to huddle himself against Bunsen's scaly belly, well underneath his wing.
Pulling his traveling pack and sword off of his back, Fate gathered the small pieces of wood he had saved from their last camp out of the bundle he'd tied them in on top of his pack and neatly arranged them in a pile in front of him. "If you'd be so kind, my good dragon..." Fate said with a smile, flourishing towards the pile of wood.
Chuckling, Bunsen inhaled softly and parted his jaws, allowing a small stream of fire to shoot past his lips and onto the pile of wood, instantly setting it ablaze, Fate raising a paw to his face to shield himself from the sudden intense heat. Chopping his jaws closed, Bunsen cut off the stream of fire, tendrils of smoke still curling from the sides of his mouth and his nostrils.
It was almost as soon as this act was completed that the rain started falling in earnest, a steady, heavy shower that rapidly suffused the entire surrounding landscape in a wet, sodden air, puddles rapidly forming in the dirt of the path, swiftly turning it into sloppy mud, the grass shining with droplets of rain. As worried as Fate had been about the effectiveness of Bunsen's wing being able to shield him from the rain, it actually did prove extremely effective, the rain sliding off the blue membranes far away from Fate's position.
Although Bunsen was getting fully hit by the rainstorm, the dragon didn't seem to mind it at all, the water sliding off his smooth scales and giving them a slick, wet shine. "See? Told you my wing would suffice~" the dragon said with a friendly smile towards his bunny companion.
Fate chuckled and gave Bunsen a warm smile back. "Yeah, I suppose you were right, my scaly friend," he replied, snuggling back against his friend's warm, scaly belly, folding his arms over his own belly as he settled in to watch and listen to the comforting sounds of the rainstorm mix in with the sounds of Bunsen's heart beating within his chest, the bunny musing to himself with a surge of affection that he couldn't think of anyone better to share in this moment than his dear draconic companion...
