In Persian and Indian tales and legends, the roc is a gigantic bird of prey able to lift up a an elephant and whose feathers with vivid colors (linking him to the phoenix and making him he too a symbol of renewal and immortality) are the same size as the palms of a palmtree. Living in a far away island, they guard the tree of knowledge, they accompany storms and are as quick as lightning, their presence announce a bad omens. Sinbad and his crew try escaping from one of them furious that they ate her eggs in One Thousand and One Nights
