Well, it is for now, because currently the main source of pure hydrogen gas is from natural gas. It is possible to extract it directly from water- the main thing keeping that method from being used on a large scale is the cost. But we're running out of petroleum, and it will soon become far cheaper to extract hydrogen from water, and in any case, I personally would rather see a bunch of petroleum used up to source hydrogen for transportation than even more of that petroleum being used faster, less efficiently, and in greater quantities to power "conventional" vehicles.
